A VISIT to a general store in the southern state of Georgia changed film-maker Sam Beam's life forever. His eyes rested on a tin of protein supplement called Beef Iron & Wine.
"It sounded totally disgusting," he remembers. "But it was on the shelf there and this strange combination of words just struck me." A couple of years later, he faced his crunch decision; whether to continue his film career or seriously pursue his other great love - music.
After Seattle indie label, Sub Pop, heard one of Sam's beguiling home demos, he was offered a deal which he duly signed and music became his priority. Sam then became Iron & Wine. "I took the 'Beef' off as it was kinda gross. And it sounds a bit more poetic without it."But has he ever sampled the stuff? "No, I have not," Sam stresses. "If you try it, let me know how it is." (I'll pass on that one.). Since his first hushed, acoustic solo recordings, Iron & Wine has emerged as one of America's most compelling and bestselling indie acts[...].
