The Dutchess and the Duke

Jesse Lortz and Kimberly Morrison make up the Dutchess and the Duke and have made quite a name for themselves playing across the country. With their old-school acoustic sound, their voices melt together as if they've been singing together forever. Spinner had the chance to chat with Lortz prior to the duo's stint at SXSW.

How would you describe your sound?

Basically just two guitars and two vocals.

How did you come with your band name?

We came up with it on accident. Originally, it was just the Dutchess but later we decided on the Dutchess and the Duke.

Beatles or Stones?

That's a hard question. I enjoy both.

Describe your musical influences.

Influences come from everywhere. My uncle was a drama teacher so I learned a lot from him. There were always musical narratives around and I enjoyed it all and learned a lot as well. I also sunk into a lot of the oldies as well. Both Kimberly and I enjoy the oldies.

What's in your festival survival kit?

Water is the most important thing to have at SXSW. Money helps as well.

What would be your dream lineup?

Thats another tough question that I haven't thought about. I would have to say Leonard Cohen.

What's something that fans would be surprised to know about you?

That Kimberly and I are not hooking up.

What was the craziest thing that happen to you at a show?

We played the Mercury Lounge in NYC and it was sold out. It was such an awesome moment. Our picture was featured in the New York Times and we were totally freaking out. We got just a little drunk before the show and blacked out during our set.
